Founder of China¡¯s Dentistry--- Dr.Ashley Woodward Lindesay |
Ashely Woodward Lindsay,1884¡ª1968.center one hundred years ago, a ferry staggered forward because of the torrential water and the adverse current. In the boat were Dr. Ashley and his just married wife. Both of them are Canadian and were sent to chengdu by Canadian Methodist Mission. At the sight of the steep cliff, rapid current and a foreign nation, they feel both joyful and surprised. They are in a high mood but feel some sad for never returning. After one month journey by boat and half month bamboo-sedan journey, they finally arrived at chengdu on May 18th,1907.
A thousand Li journey starts with the first step: the first dentist missionary to china
After he arrived ,Dr Lindsay thought he could start his business then . as a matter of fact, however , he did not. Because according to the church rules , dentist should master the native language before treating patients. Language training took at least two years. What¡¯s worse, Lindsay found that his colleagues doubt at his skill. He also doubted many Chinese would alienate foreign dentists.
This young dentist braved all hardships and turned a new leaf of china ¡¯s dentistry. As early as the year 1892, Dr Cerdy established a renji hospital at sisheng temple and he shared one room with Lindsay as his dental clinic. It was then at the time of Qing dynasty, and men and women could not have physical contact according to china¡¯s tradition. The clinic had to be separated into two, one is for men, the other for women. Many people thought no women will come for Lindsay¡¯s treatment. To the surprise of everyone, the first patient of Lindsay was a woman. While check-up, Lindsay found that the patient had contracted alveolar abscess for a dozen years. It was said that she had taken many Chinese medicine but with no effect. And now she was desperate and in great pains. Fortunately, her condition got better by extraction and a complete scaling. Soon she rehabilitated. Lindsay became very renowned and the number of his patients increased.
Some women, however, were little satisfied with Lindsay for him not going out to treat patients. According to discipline rites, women should not go out of the mansion. This tradition was not broken until the governor brought his nephew to the clinic for treatment of her necrosis lower palate. From then on, it was no a surprise to see women patients going to the dental clinic.
Lindsay stayed at Sichuan for only three years. His practice was certified by the church and they gave him a high praise. therefore a specialized dental hospital as Lindsay required was established at the left side of sisheng temple. center before the hospital completed, road protection movement rose up. In that case, Lindsays went to shanghai to avoid it. It was fortunate that the society soon restored and the couple returned. They were able to preside over the opening ceremony. The hospital was the first formal dental hospital and was said as the ¡°first of far east¡±.
In 1950, Lindsay left china and returned Canada after working for 40 years in china. West china xiehe university dental school is the predecessor of west china stomatology school , Sichuan university integrating dental college, stomatology hospital, stomatology research institute. Its scale , technique, teaching staff and facility are better than ever. J. D. Endicott once commented that ¡°he {Lindsay}, as the father of modern dentistry, is respected by 1/4 of world population¡±. A bronze statue of Lindsay was set up to commemorate his contribution to stomatology.

¡°Knowing who was ill is more important than knowing what kind of illness he contracted¡±---- Hippocrates, a famous doctor of the ancient Greece and considered as the ¡° father of medicine¡± in west world.
In ancient times, doctors would pledge before practicing: You do solemnly swear, each by whatever he or she holds most sacred That you will be loyal to the Profession of Medicine and just and generous to its members.
That you will lead your lives and practice your art in upcenterness and honor;
That into whatsoever house you shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick to the utmost of your power, your holding yourselves far aloof from wrong, from corruption, from the tempting of others to vice
That you will exercise your art solely for the cure of your patients, and will give no drug, perform no operation, for a criminal purpose, even if solicited, far less suggest it
That whatsoever you shall see or hear of the lives of men or women which is not fitting to be spoken, you will keep inviolably secret..”
The conduct of rules was made by Hippocrates. Based on this, the world medical association implemented international medical practitioners’ conduct of rules In the 50s of 20 century.
